Liposuction procedures up 90%
There has been a marked increase in the number of cosmetic surgery operations in the UK, according to new figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps).
Members of the group announced they undertook 3,986 liposuction treatments in 2006 compared to 2,099 in 2005, making liposuction the third most popular procedure – up from eighth last year.
Overall cosmetic surgery procedures increased by a third in 2006 with liposuction procedures up by 90 per cent.
Breast enlargements proved the most popular operation with 6,156 procedures undergone in total, which was an increase of nine per cent from 2005.
Second in the popularity stakes was eyelid surgery – technically know as blepharoplasty – which 5,065 people underwent in 2006, representing an increase of 48 per cent on the 2005 figures.
Mr Stewart, a Baaps spokesman, told the Scotsman why there has been such a rapid increase in the number of cosmetic surgery operations.
He said: "People will have put up with things all their lives, but then realise cosmetic surgery is not just for Hollywood stars.
"They realise it is affordable and maybe it is recommended by a friend who has had it done."
