Silicone breast implants back in vogue

A leading US plastic surgeon has said that after substantial research into the topic, silicone breast implants have been approved by a federal agency and are set for a renaissance.

Typically a controversial subject, silicone breast implants were gradually replaced with saline versions in both the US and the UK during the nineties.

However, after ten years of scientific study, silicone breast implants have now been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for general usage.

And a leading plastic surgeon, Dr Lloyd Krieger - the founder and medical director of Rodeo Drive Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills – has advocated the benefits of silicone over saline implants.

He said: "They tend to look and feel more natural than saline implants. They are less prone to rippling or crinkling which can sometimes be felt and occasionally can become visible under the skin.

"In the US, we are likely to see a large number of patients select silicone breast implants. That is already the case as I see people interested in breast augmentation in California."
