2006 sees plastic surgery boom
The past year has seen a large rise in the number of people in the UK who have opted for cosmetic surgery.
Research by Mintel, the Harley Medical Group and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) indicates that the 690,000 cosmetic procedures that took place this year is 40 per cent higher than in 2005.
In addition, this figure is a 240 per cent improvement on 2001.
"Acceptance of cosmetic surgery is growing within the British psyche, which is reflected in the increasing number of cosmetic surgery procedures being carried out in this country," remarked Jenny Catlin, Mintel's senior market analyst.
The number of high profile celebrities that have gone under the knife and the television coverage of procedures are thought to be contributing to the rise in numbers.
"With further medical developments offering easier access to cosmetic treatments and as the 'mystique' factor lessens, the market will invariably attract new customers," she added.
Some £539 million will be spent on plastic surgery this year, 338 per cent up on five years ago.
