Chinese transfixed by plastic surgery

China is quickly discovering plastic surgery with the arrival of a US television show.

MTV China is building on the success of recent interest in beauty and fame shows and is now screening the US reality hit, I want a Famous Face, reports Xinhua. The controversial programme follows people hoping that cosmetic surgery will help turn them into a mirror-image of their favourite celebrity.

However, there are concerns that some scenes from the show could prove difficult viewing, especially for anyone planning to go under the knife in the near-future. Although MTV China blurred various aspects of the operations and issued warnings of content at the start of the show, some surgeons believe it could discourage people from seeking out the help of a plastic surgeon.

"I know a girl who saw surgery being done on someone else and then refused to undergo an operation for double-fold eyelid she had asked for," said Liang Wenbo, director of Yinhang Hospital in Guangzhou.

"Creating beauty is not necessarily a beautiful process," he added.

However, China is also discovering the benefits of plastic surgery, especially for Chen Yong, a man who was seriously injured while repairing a cement mixer that was accidentally switched on.

China Daily reports that Mr Yong will undergo a number of procedures at a hospital in Xi'an as surgeons attempt to rebuild his face and are optimistic that he will be eventually able to chew, swallow, speak and breathe on his own.
