Men claim facelifts are career boosts

Plastic surgeons in the Middle East are enjoying booming demand for their services as increasing numbers of men looking to get ahead professionally go under the knife.

Leading plastic surgeons in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are reporting a 30 per cent uptake in surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures for men, seeking to gain an advantage in the competitive local jobs market.

In an interview with Gulf News Dr Mohan Rangasarmy said: “I had a guy last week who has a good job but people said he always looked tired.

“In this part of the world, if you start looking tired, they might think you’re too old for the job and try to phase you out,” said the plastic surgeon who operates at the UAE’s Welcare Hospital.

Treatments commonly done on modern-day men include hair transplants, liposuction, neck and facelifts, rhinoplasty otherwise known as a nose job and eyelid surgeries.

The reported increase in men going under the knife is born out by Jebel Ali Hospital, where visiting plastic surgeon Dr Sanjay Parashar, has seen a significant increase in men presenting themselves for surgery at his clinics.

Dr Parashar told Trade Arabia News Service that men can approach plastic surgery with unrealistic expectations of what their face lift can achieve, particularly if they want to look like a particular celebrity.

“It is important not to take a casual attitude with surgery – cosmetic surgery is not as straightforward as visiting the hairdresser.
