Cosmetic surgery linked to suicide
Scientists are warning that the popularity of cosmetic surgery could be partly responsible for a rise in suicides.
A report by New Scientist claims that women who have had breast implants are three times more likely to turn the knife on themselves than those who have not.
Some experts believe that leaks from implants could be altering the brain chemistry of women, making them more vulnerable to suicidal tendencies.
Others suggest that people who are keen to change their appearance through plastic surgery may be more liable to have a psychiatric disorder.
A number of recent studies in to medical conditions associated with implants have found a link between breast implants and suicide in women while other reports have noted similar results for men who have undergone enhancements.
"The only consistent finding from all the studies has been the unexpected one of suicide," says Dr Joseph McLaughlin, director of the International Epidemiology Institute.
Researchers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons state that over ten million people in the US underwent plastic surgery last year.
