Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that is used to remove excess fat from the human body. What is Liposuction?

Usually, liposuctions are performed by plastic or cosmetic surgeons. They can also be performed by dermatologists. However, since it is not a major surgical procedure, it is not necessary that only these kinds of surgeons can perform liposuction. Any licensed physician can perform a liposuction. There is no standard training module that one can undergo to be able to get a license to perform a liposuction. However, there are some medical societies that require surgeons performing liposuction to be trained.

One hazard of such a scenario is that you never know for sure how experienced or how well-versed a surgeon is in this kind of surgery. One good way of finding out is to ask the surgeon during a consultation; however, there is no certainty that even a qualified and trained professional can guarantee you a complication-free surgery. As with any surgical procedure, the risk of complications is always there, even with liposuction.

As with any surgical procedure, it is essential that liposuction too is performed in a clean and sanitized environment. If this is not done, then there is maximum risk of post-operational infection.

Liposuction, however, is not a major surgical procedure. Hence, it can be performed in a doctor’s clinic itself. However, the venue may be shifted depending on the general physical condition of the patient. For a patient with a history of other medical problems, there are chances of complications or other such emergencies arising during the surgery itself. Therefore, it is vital that the surgeon has access to emergency medical facilities at the site of the procedure. In this light, it is always advisable to have the procedure done in a place that has emergency medical apparatus to deal with any medical emergency.
