Breast Enhancement & Mammography

RSS feed icon Published On 7 January 2007

We have discussed quite a few types of risks and problems associated with breast augmentation in previous articles. We have talked about infection, capsular contracture, haematoma, implant displacement, and altered breast and nipple sensation. We will discuss a few more risks in this article.

Augmentation Mammoplasty and Mammograms

A patient who has had an augmentation mammoplasty procedure may face problems if she is going for a mammogram. This has been the findings of studies in this area in the fight against breast cancer.

One thing you need to be clear of at the outset. The breast implants placed through an augmentation mammoplasty will not cause cancer.

There is no study to prove otherwise. However, there is proof that while breast implants do not cause cancer, they can certainly cause problems in the detection of a cancerous growth in the breast.

How this happens is simple, actually. A breast implant is an external element that is placed underneath the skin in the breast region. It therefore covers up some portion of the muscle or tissue in that region, depending on whether it is placed under or over the muscle.

Therefore when a mammogram is done, the portion underneath the implant will not get properly screened, and a malignant lesion in that area may not show up.

Augmentation Mammoplasty and Mammograms – Difficulties Faced

Simply put, when the screening is not undertaken properly, the result may not be 100 percent accurate. How inaccurate the mammogram result is depends mainly on the kind of augmentation mammoplasty procedure itself. The chances of a malignant lesion going undetected are lesser if the implants are placed underneath the muscle in the breast than if the implant is placed over the muscle.

This is because when the implant is underneath the muscle, it covers only about 10 percent of the breast tissue, while if it is placed over the muscle, it covers about 25 percent of the breast tissue.

There is another problem that implants may cause during a mammogram. After an augmentation mammoplasty is done, there is scar tissue formation on the surface. Underneath the scar tissue, calcium deposits usually are found. When analysing a mammogram, there is a strong chance that the doctor may not be able to easily distinguish between such calcium deposits and an actually malignant tumour. This can be a serious problem if the doctor is not familiar with handling implant patients.

Augmentation Mammoplasty and Mammograms – The Solution

To be sure that there is no chance of an implant hampering a mammogram, the simplest and best way is to go to a medical facility that has professionals who are familiar with the points discussed above. Patients who have undergone augmentation mammoplasty require extra imaging to ensure that the entire breast region is put under the scanner when doing a mammogram.

It is really important that technicians conducting mammograms are aware of this point, so that they can do whatever is required to ensure that no part of the breast region escapes the scanner. A simple thing to do would be for the patient to inform the facility when taking the appointment for the mammogram that she has had an augmentation mammoplasty done and has implants. Once the technician and the doctor are aware of this, they will take the necessary extra measures to ensure that the mammogram is accurate. The doctor also will then know what to look for.
