Introduction to Breast Enhancement (Augmentation Mammoplasty)
Augmentation mammoplasty is a surgical procedure that helps enhance the size and shape of a woman’s breasts. It is one of the most preferred cosmetic surgical procedures today, so much so that it has actually lost its high sounding name and is commonly referred to, sometimes derogatorily, as ‘silicone job’.
Often among women, breast size is a serious affair. It is one of the features of their body that make them different from men, and also contribute to their beauty.
In such a scenario, having small breasts can be cause for major embarrassment. Not just embarrassment, in some women small breasts can cause low self esteem. There are also women whose breasts shrink post-pregnancy.
Having normal-sized breasts all your life, only to see them shrink after pregnancy can be a discomforting feeling.
For all these women, augmentation mammoplasty is the answer to the problem.
In this article we will discuss in brief what augmentation mammoplasty is, the procedure itself, and who requires it.
What is Augmentation Mammoplasty?
Augmentation mammoplasty is the medical terminology used to describe a cosmetic surgical procedure that helps women enhance the shape as well as size of their breasts. It basically is a procedure that makes a woman’s breasts seem larger and fuller. As mentioned above, this is a surgical option for women with small breasts.
As with other cosmetic surgical procedures, the decision to go in for augmentation mammoplasty rests solely with the patient mostly. It is never a medical requirement. As the name suggests, it is an enhancement, not a necessity. There could be some women who are perfectly comfortable with small breasts, and would never think that they required augmentation mammoplasty, while there could be others who see it as an essential requirement. The choice is purely individual
Augmentation Mammoplasty – The Procedure
The procedure is simple, really. The surgeon makes an incision near the breasts and inserts an implant, usually a silicone implant (hence the name), behind each breast. The implants push the breast out and thereby increase their size. Now they are at least one or two sizes larger than they originally were.
The surgeon makes the incision keeping in mind the fact that scarring needs to be minimal, as these take time to fade away. Therefore, the ideal points of making the incision are usually:
- The area around the nipple
- The crease of the breast
- The armpit
Basically, the surgeon makes the incision and then lifts the breast tissue and skin in that area. This helps to create a sort of a vacuous space, a pocket, in that area.
Once the pocket is created, the surgeon slips in the implant directly under the muscle of the chest wall. The other option is to slip it in beneath the breast tissue.
Augmentation Mammoplasty – Who is an Ideal Candidate?
Usually, women who are looking to enhance the look of their breasts are ideal candidates. Women need to understand and realize one thing – augmentation mammoplasty will make their breasts look better; they will not make them perfect. That should be the basic criterion behind going in for augmentation mammoplasty.
In the next article, we will discuss more about the types of implants possible, the risks associated with augmentation mammoplasty, and the procedure itself in detail.
