Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) Surgical Evaluation

RSS feed icon Published On 1 January 2007

In the previous article about Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) procedures, we discussed what abdominoplasty was. In this article, we will discuss the evaluation required prior to the procedure, as well as the procedure itself.

Abdominoplasty – Pre-Procedural Evaluation

Before going in for an abdominoplasty, a patient must consult with the surgeon and get an evaluation done, as to whether the surgery is advisable. During this meeting the surgeon carries out a thorough examination and evaluation of the patient’s physical condition – whether the patient is physically fit enough to undergo the procedure, whether the vital parameters are normal or not.

Besides determining whether the patient is actually fit for surgery, the surgeon also evaluates the condition of the abdominal region, which is where the operation will be done. The surgeon checks the skin tone of the patient, the amount of fat deposition in the abdominal region.

The evaluation also helps in establishing a rapport between patient and surgeon. If you are the patient, you can feel free to ask any question that you may have regarding the surgery. This will also enable the surgeon to give you detailed information regarding the procedure and related issues – healing time, potential risks, potential benefit points, etc.

You can also check with your surgeon if the procedure is covered under insurance. In most instances it is not, and hence it is a good idea to be clear about it right from the beginning.

Types of Abdominoplasty

Creating an aura of familiarity between patient and surgeon is just one of the benefits of the evaluation process. Based on his examination, the surgeon can determine which type of abdominoplasty you require. As mentioned in the previous article, there are two types of abdominoplasty – partial abdominoplasty and complete abdominoplasty.

Both these procedures differ from each other in terms of the amount of work involved. A complete abdominoplasty is obviously more complicated, and involves greater effort, skill, and time. A partial procedure is, on the other hand, of lesser duration than the complete one.

There are also a couple of other types of abdominoplasty, but these are more or less variations of these two basic types. We will discuss these in the next section.

When are the Different Types of Abdominoplasty Required?

There are different instances that require the usage of different types of abdominoplasty. When removing the excess fat and skin is a relatively simple task, the surgeon would obviously prefer doing a partial abdominoplasty. Surgeons prefer a partial abdominoplasty if the fat to be removed is from below the navel.

However, if the amount of fat and skin is excessive, then the best option is to go for the complete procedure. By excessive, the reference is to the surface area over which the fat is spread.

There is also the option of undergoing an abdominoplasty in combination with liposuction. This is done when fat removal involves the hip portion as well. There is also another option, called extended abdominoplasty, where the surgery includes an extended incision into either the flanks (if the fat has to be removed from the rear portion of the upper leg) or the thighs (if the fat has to be removed from the front).

Your surgeon is the best person to advise you on the type of abdominoplasty you need. That is the reason that the pre-procedural evaluation that we discussed earlier is so important. It enables the surgeon to give you a clear picture of what to expect from the surgery. It also gives you the chance to clear all your doubts with the surgeon.
