Face Lift Surgery – After The Operation

RSS feed icon Published On 7 August 2007

Once the bandages come off after face lift surgery (rhytidectomy), do not be alarmed at the way your face might seem. The bruises and the swelling are only natural, and will subside over time. Usually, you will begin to look your normal self in about three to four weeks. The stitches come off in about four to five days from the day of the procedure. While the swelling will come down soon, the scalp may take a while to heal. The scalp has delicate tissue, and the healing period is slightly longer. The stitches on the scalp are usually left on for a few days more than the stitches on the remaining areas.

Post-Rhytidectomy – Recovery Timeframe

While a facelift will not exactly confine you to bed for a prolonged period, it is a good idea to take things easy for a while. Ideally, it is better not to over-exert yourself for at least a week after the procedure. There are a lot of things that you should be careful about: the first and foremost is to be extra careful while handling your scalp and your face. The reason for this is simple: after the procedure these areas will be tender and sore, and handling them roughly will cause unnecessary discomfort, pain and possibly complications as well.

Post-Rhytidectomy – Handling how you Feel

There are some other things as well. You may feel uncomfortable initially, about the fact that while you were supposed to look better, you were at that moment looking far worse. This can sometimes lead to depression. All you need to do is hang in there. Just give it time and soon the results will be there for you to see. Physically too, you might feel some of the changes; your face could be a lot stiffer than it originally was, due to the repositioning of the tissues.

Besides, you will most likely feel self-conscious, as people stare at your scars, or even as you stare at yourself in the mirror. As mentioned, the solution to overcoming all this is time. However, the good side is that things get better soon after. After the period of pain, discomfort, and self-consciousness, it is just a matter of time before you begin to feel your old self again, with a new look, of course.

Post-Rhytidectomy – Things to Avoid

After a face lift, there are a lot of things that you should stay away from. These include activities, food and drink items, etc. While you need to abstain from some of these things for a shorter time frame, i.e. a couple of weeks or three, there are some things that you need to stay away from for a relatively longer time.

The things that you really need to avoid are basically things that would be harmful to, or put undue strain on, your face and scalp region. Primarily, you need to ensure that you do not do too much heavy work. These activities include household work, and sex as well.

Post-Rhytidectomy – the Fresh Look

After a rhytidectomy procedure, your skin, especially near the face and neck region, is out of sorts for some time, but that is only temporary, and harmless. What is hard about a rhytidectomy is that it is not a permanent solution. You will want it, or require it, again after the first time. In that sense, it can be slightly depressing. However, from another point of view, it is good too, in the sense that you will feel much better with your new look than you did with your earlier look.
