Face Lift Surgery: pre-operative procedures

RSS feed icon Published On 7 August 2007

In the previous article we discussed what face lift surgery (rhytidectomy) is, the basic scientific process behind rhytidectomy, its popularity, and who could opt for a rhytidectomy. In this article, we will discuss the actual procedure of rhytidectomy itself, post-operative care, the amount of time it would take for the changes to set in, and the duration that a rhytidectomy would be effective.

To recap, rhytidectomy is basically a procedure involving removing wrinkles and creases from the facial area of a person. It is commonly called a facelift. Usually, people whose skin has begun to sag at the face and neck areas opt for rhytidectomy.

In this article we will discuss the pre-operative process for rhytidectomy. Prior to the operation there are a few things that you need to be aware of, and follow consciously, so that no complications arise during or after the process. When the area to be operated upon is your face, it is a good idea to plan the whole operation, so that nothing goes wrong. A small mistake and your looks could be altered!

Face Lifts – Pre-Operative Examination

The skin is a very delicate organ, and not all people have the same type of skin. This means that we cannot have one generalized rhytidectomical procedure for all people. While the basic procedure may be the same for all, the finer points within the process will differ from one person to the next.

Therefore, it is a good idea to meet the surgeon for a pre-operative examination. During this visit, certain things become clear to the surgeon – your skin type, the condition of your skin, and the bones underneath them. During this visit, the surgeon also performs an evaluation of your general physical condition to ensure that you are not suffering from any such physical condition or problem that can cause complications during or post-surgery. These conditions could be anything, ranging from high blood pressure to diabetes, scar-tissue forming issues.

You must be open to the doctor about your normal habits, such as smoking, medication, etc. – in short you need to let the surgeon know all those things that could have an impact on either the surgical procedure or the healing process.

Preparing for the face Lift Procedure

There are certain guidelines you will receive from your surgeon, just prior to the surgery, about the things to avoid so that the surgical process can be done smoothly, and recovery is fast and unhindered. If you are a smoker, you need to stop smoking a week before and a week after the procedure. This is because smoking usually inhibits uniform blood flow to the skin, and can hamper the healing of the incisions.

Another thing you could do, if you are conscious about scarring and how that might affect your looks, is to grow your hair long so that it hides the scars caused by the incisions.

Other things you need to avoid or get a clearance from the surgeon for use, is the use of certain medications, as mentioned earlier. Specifically, you need to get a clearance from the doctor regarding the usage of medication like aspirin and other such drugs that can affect or retard the clotting process.

Face Lift Surgery – Where is the Venue?

Usually, rhytidectomy is performed as an outpatient procedure. In such cases, a local anesthetic is administered. However, if the patient is jittery about the local anesthesia, the surgeon may use a general anesthetic, in which case they will hospitalize you for a ay or two and keep you under observation even after the procedure is complete, to monitor your initial recovery.
