Injections for Lip Augmentation
There are different types of injections that you can choose from, for a lip augmentation procedure, as we have listed out in an earlier article. The surgeon performing the procedure can decide which type works best for you. Let us now discuss the different types of injections available.
Collagen Injections
Collagen is a protein-based substance found under the skin. However, the collagen used in a lip augmentation injection is not human-based; it is derived from bovine protein. Collagen plumps up the lines and sunken areas near the lips, giving it the fullness that you are looking for. It doesn’t take too long to take a collagen injection. It is done alone or in conjunction with laser resurfacing or some other related cosmetic procedures.
However, using a collagen injection is not a permanent fix and needs to be repeated. This is because collagen is absorbed by the body, and therefore the full shape that it imparts disappears over time; hence the need for repetition. Sometimes it may cause allergic reaction, infection and skin irregularity.
Autologen Injection
An autologen injection basically has collagen, human collagen. It is, in fact, extracted from the patient’s own body. It is harvested during a previous operation and processed into liquid form. An autologen injection appears to last longer than bovine collagen injections. There are no side effects, such as allergic reactions, since the collagen, in this case, is from one’s own skin.
Fascia
Fascia is a white connective tissue. Fascia can be extracted from both dead as well as live bodies. In the case of the latter, it can be taken from the patient’s own body. Fascia can be given as an injection, and also implanted using a surgical procedure.
The problem with fascia is similar to that with collagen injections – the body absorbs it back, and so you may have to opt for a repeat procedure.
Dermalogen
Dermalogen is another form of collagen. It is extracted from dead bodies, and sterilized, purified, and processed into liquid form. Dermalogen is also called Human Tissue Matrix.
A dermalogen injection can cause a slight redness to appear around the injected area; however it subsides within a day.
Artecoll
Artecoll is the only permanent injectable implant. It is, however, synthetic, and is composed of microscopic beads that are folded into a collagen solution containing anesthetic for the relief of mild post treatment tenderness.
The disadvantage of using artecoll is that there are increased chances of allergic reactions compared to other injection types.
HylaForm
HylaForm is a solution extracted from hyaluronic acid, a natural sugar found inside all living cells. HylaForm provides very quick results and has a minimal recovery period.
As with other injections that are made of body tissue or sugars, HylaForm too usually breaks down over a period of time and is reabsorbed by the body. This injection type also requires repetitions for longer term effectiveness, up to two or three times a year.
Fat
Fat is one of the most widely used materials for injection. Like other injectable materials, fat helps reduce or eliminate wrinkles and also pushed out the shape of the lip, giving it a fuller appearance. The fat can be taken from the thigh or abdomen area of the patient. This means a zero possibility of allergic reactions, and therefore, increased safety. It can be used in higher volumes than other injectable materials.
Restylane
Restylane is another hyaluronic acid-based substance that restores the natural volumes underneath the lip. A Restylane injection procedure takes minimal time, just thirty minutes, and leaves no scars. There are no side effects too, since it is derived within the body. The disadvantage of using Restylane is the same as that faced in using natural body substances.
