The Risk of Infection after Augmentation Mammoplasty (Breast Enhancement)
Recapping About Breast Enhancement Surgery
In previous articles, we talked about what augmentation mammoplasty, or breast enhancement, is, who opted for it, and the basic procedure. We also discussed the types of implants used in augmentation mammoplasty.
In this article, we will discuss some of the risks associated with undergoing augmentation mammoplasty.
Is Augmentation Mammoplasty Harmful?
Augmentation mammoplasty is not harmful. Basically as the name suggests, it is an augmentative procedure, i.e. something that helps people enhance their looks. However, one thing you need to be aware of if you are considering an augmentation mammoplasty is that there are strong chances that this will not be the only implant-related surgery you will have in your life. Most implant patients have at least one follow-up surgical procedure.
Augmentation Mammoplasty – The Risks Involved
There are a few risks involved with augmentation mammoplasty that you need to know about if you are considering the procedure. This information is something that you must ensure you get from the surgeon you are consulting.
Problems can be due to any number of reasons. They could arise due to improper positioning of the implants during surgery or over a period of time, rupturing of the shell of the implant, contraction of the capsule, wrinkling of the shell, or asymmetrical sizes of the shells. There are other complications that may arise after augmentation mammoplasty. One of the problems you may face post-augmentation mammoplasty, indeed post any surgical procedure, is the scope for infection to set in.
We will discuss the impact of infection on the procedure, in this article.
Augmentation Mammoplasty – Is Infection a Risk?
Infection is definitely a high risk possibility post-augmentation mammoplasty, as it is usually after any surgical procedure, major or minor. Infections are usually not a very major cause for concern.
Symptoms of infection include a swelling and tenderness, inflammation, reddening, tenderness, and also a temperature. Usually, an infection is a minor incident and can be treated using antibiotics. However, occasionally, an infection can turn nasty. In such a situation, the solution would be to surgically remove the implant. The problem with this is that it cannot be removed until the infection has been controlled. The amount of time it takes to control an infection depends on its severity.
Avoiding Infections Post-Augmentation Mammoplasty
There are many ways of making sure you do not catch an infection after you have undergone augmentation mammoplasty. The first thing you can do is to avoid swimming, or soaking yourself in a bathtub. Exposing the incision area to water for prolonged periods can result in an infection.
You should not touch the incision with your hands. Our hands often have bacteria or other such harmful micro-organisms, which can cause an infection.
There are other things that you can be careful about. For example, you can ensure that you do not apply any lotion on the incision. Usually, what happens is that after the procedure, you may experience an itching sensation in the breast region. This sensation comes primarily because the skin is stretched as a result of the implants being inserted. You may use a lotion to control the itching sensation; however, ensure that the lotion does not touch the incision.
The other thing you can do is in a situation if the incision has been made in the armpit region, i.e. in the case of a transaxilliary incision. In such a case, do not apply any deodorant in the armpit region.
