The Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure that is performed to remove excessive fat, as well as the skin stretched across the fat, from the abdomen region of a person. It is commonly referred to as a ‘tummy tuck’, but is a bit more complicated than it sounds. The process is longer and more complicated than some of the other cosmetic surgical procedures we have discussed in earlier articles.
The areas involved in an abdominoplasty are usually the lower and middle abdomen skin, muscle and fatty tissue. There is one direct negative side to abdominoplasty – it leaves a large, noticeable scar on the operated area, and the scar takes a while to vanish. Other than this, there are not too many other blemishes with the process.
When is Abdominoplasty Done?
Abdominoplasty is usually an option for women (and even men) with a very prominent abdomen or stomach. While in the case of men, this still looks okay, it is something that women are not too keen to develop – a large belly. Abdominoplasty is the solution in such situations.
There are other scenarios as well when a person may want to opt for abdominoplasty. Sometimes after going through a crash dieting program and losing a whole lot of weight, there is a lot of excess skin that needs to be removed. The same is the situation in the case of women who have undergone multiple pregnancies. In such cases the skin and muscles of the abdominal region are stretched beyond the point of normalcy. For it to come back to normal levels, abdominoplasty becomes necessary.
Abdominoplasty is not advisable for:
- Women who plan to conceive again
- People who intend to go into a weight loss program
Types of Abdominoplasty
In this section, we will take a look at the general procedure associated with abdominoplasty.
Basically, there are two types of abdominoplasty procedures:
Complete abdominoplasty is, as the name suggests, more comprehensive than the partial procedure. We will study these two procedures in detail in the next article. Besides, we will also look at the different sub-versions within these two procedures.
How much does an Abdominoplasty Cost?
In the UK, an abdominoplasty is a costly operation. It costs anywhere between £4,000 to £12,000. The cost of the operation, as with most other cosmetic procedures, is dependent on a large number of factors – the amount of work required, the age of the patient, the physical condition of the patient.
Risks Associated with Abdominoplasty
As with any other surgical procedure, an abdominoplasty, while usually safe, can carry a certain element of risk. To negate this risk at a very basic level, it is necessary to ensure that the surgeon performing the procedure is a skilled person and knows about the concepts of body contouring.
Normally, the risks are identified with the post-operative stage, when there is chance for infection to set in. The other risk is the occurrence of blood clots. While both these do not happen normally, there is an element of possibility involved. While antibiotics and drainage are usually enough to contain any infection that sets in, the patient should start moving around soon after the operation so that the chances of clots forming are minimized.
In some cases, the healing process may be inadequate, thereby requiring further operations. Patients are usually advised to stop smoking until the scars are healed totally, as smoking holds up the process of healing. The other precaution to take is to follow the physician’s advice when it comes to physical exertion.
In the next article, we will discuss about the tummy tuck procedure itself in detail, and the various other aspects linked to the operation.
